    A banana blueberry smoothie makes a healthy breakfast using simple ingredients that also happen to be loaded with protein to keep you full and going for longer. This smoothie is so good it almost tastes like you are drinking an ice-cream filled milkshake rather than a healthy smoothie.

    Loaded with healthy ingredients, this is the perfect smoothie to serve for breakfast.

    Making protein-loaded smoothies like this smoothie and this Red Berry Protein Smoothie Without Protein Powder is the best way to start the day when you know it is going to be a busy day, or you have a lot on. They make an easy breakfast and load you up with goodness all at once.

    Banana Blueberry Protein Smoothie

    This smoothie is loaded with healthy fats and great nutrients, making it the perfect creamy smoothie to start the day.

    You will need:

    • frozen banana: use a ripe banana, the more ripe the banana, the sweeter the smoothie. If you do not have frozen bananas you can always use fresh fruit, but you will need to add some ice to the blender when blending;
    • vanilla almond milk: depending on the ingredients included in the almond milk you may prefer to opt for a plain almond milk and simply add some vanilla extract yourself. You can also make you own vanilla almond milk by using this guide: Thick and Creamy Homemade Nut Milk;. Alternatively you can use another plant-based milk of choice like coconut milk or soy milk if you prefer;
    • oats: use rolled oats, and be sure to check the ingredient label if you want this smoothie to be gluten-free;
    • vanilla protein powder: be sure to check the ingredients of the protein powder you intend to use as some can be loaded with extra sugars;
    • blueberries: fresh or frozen blueberries or wild blueberries can be used. Just be sure to add some extra ice if you use fresh blueberries or the smoothie will not be cold enough after blending;
    • vanilla extract: this is an optional extra and gives the smoothie some additional sweetness to make it taste like pancakes, if you prefer to leave it out you absolutely can;
    • almond extract: this is an optional extra and gives the smoothie some additional sweetness to make it taste like pancakes, if you prefer to leave it out you absolutely can;
    • ice cubes: add extra ice to make sure the smoothie is nice and cold. This is especially important if you have used fresh banana and blueberries instead of frozen.

    If you do not have frozen bananas or raspberries, be sure to add a cup of ice to the smoothie mixture when blending.

    How To Make A Protein Smoothie

    As is the case with most smoothies, this one is pretty simple to make.

    We are going to add everything to the blender and blend until all of the ingredients have combined and the mixture is smooth and creamy.

    blueberries, milk, protein powder and ice in a glass blender container
    Add all of the ingredients to a blender container and blend until completely smooth.

    Use a high speed blender to make sure the ingredients are properly blended so you end up with the best blueberry banana smoothie.

    a pink/purple smoothie blended with a few bubbles on top
    There should be no 'bits' in the smoothie. It should be completely blended.

    Pour into your glass of choice, top with some additional blueberries and a sprinkle of oats and you are good to go.

    The perfect thick smoothie for an afternoon snack.

    If you prefer to have a smoothie bowl or prefer your smoothie to have a thicker consistency, then reduce the amount of liquid added by about a half and add a cup of ice.

    Tips, Tricks and Substitutions

    Protein Powder

    Choose your protein powder wisely depending on individual preferences.

    I.e. if you follow a vegan diet you will want to be sure you buy a vegan powder, and if you are avoiding sugar you will want to be sure you buy a version that isn't loaded with extra sugars.

    Check the ingredients of your protein powder.

    Protein Without Protein Powder or Extra Protein

    If you would prefer to make this smoothie without protein powder, or if you want to add even more protein then why not try one of these alternatives:

    • add a scoop of almond butter;
    • add a scoop of peanut butter;
    • add a scoop of cashew butter;
    • add a tablespoon of hemp seeds;
    • add a tablespoon of chia seeds'
    • add a tablespoon of whole flax seeds or ground flaxseed;
    • add a dollop of plain yogurt or Greek yogurt.

    How To Serve Your Banana Blueberry Smoothie

    Once the smoothie is blended and smooth serve it in a smoothie cup or in a tall glass or mason jar.

    Top with some extra blueberries and a sprinkle of oats.

    If you plan on packing for work or lunch be sure to serve it in a glass jar with an airtight lid to prevent leakages.

    What to do with leftover smoothie

    Leftover smoothies should be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days.

    The banana may become extra sweet if left for too long.

    Alternatively, why not use a popsicle mold or an icecube tray and make smoothie popsicles, or smoothie ice cubes, which can be added to your next fruit smoothie blend.

    This is the perfect way to cut down on waste!

    Hello and welcome, I'm Donna!

    I am so glad you are here!

    Since I have a part-time job, 3 little kids, and a love of good food (as do you I assume), I have learned how to get the most out of the kitchen in the smallest amount of time.

    Forget about hunting down weird ingredients and making trips to specialty shops.

    We are going to make the most of what is available at the store and farmer's markets all whilst enjoying some delicious meals the whole family (hopefully...if you have fussy eaters I guarantee nothing) will enjoy.

    Pop on that apron and let's get creative in the kitchen!
