    Citrus Juice Explosion Smoothie

    Why Do We Need A Citrus Juice Explosion Smoothie?

    It's that time of year when all the bugs come home to roost and your body could do with a little pick me up.

    I have been battling a cold for weeks now (seriously, it's been ongoing for about 5 weeks which is just ridiculous). It is one of those lingering bugs that I just can't shake - mainly because I am in the last trimester and my immune system is just not what it should be, plus my 4yo has just started preschool....and we all know what germs come home with them at the end of the day!

    I feel like I have been slammed with every bug winter has to offer this year.

    Enough is enough. I am kicking this bug in the butt.

    I have been sipping on these citrus juice explosion smoothies for the past couple of days, and I can feel them doing wonders for my body.

    It's probably a combination of the 'all in my head placebo effect' and timing etc but it can't be bad to be pumping your body full of this many awesome ingredients either, right??

    Citrus Juice Explosion Smoothie

    What Produce Do We Need For a Citrus Juice Explosion Smoothie?

    Living in Northern CA there is citrus everywhere at this time of the year, and having lovely neighbors that like to share their bounty means we always have a lot of produce to go round.

    For this drink we are going to load up the blender (I use this one: Vitamix 5300) with:

    • Grapefruit;
    • Orange;
    • Lemons;
    • Ginger
    • Turmeric
    • Apple Cider Vinegar
    • Honey

    ....and a couple of other bits and pieces to round it out.

    Want To Add A Bit Of A Kick?

    I like to add a little pinch of cayenne pepper to mine as I like the kick, but that is totally optional, and if you are giving it to kids you will probably want to pass on that (unless they are little weirdos like mine, and go gaga for spicy things).

    Hope you love this super refreshing smoothie as much as we do!

    It is definitely a little bit of spring in a glass and will cheer up those winter blues right away whilst giving your immune system that kick it needs to keep on keepin on.

    Ingredients

    • 1 orange, peeled
    • 1 grapefruit, peeled
    • ½ lemon, juiced
    • 1 cup pineapple juice
    • ½ cup coconut water
    • 1 teaspoon ginger, peeled and grated
    • ½ teaspoon ground turmeric
    • 1 teaspoon raw apple cider vinegar
    • 2 tablespoon raw honey, preferably manuka if you can find it
    • small pinch of cayenne pepper (optional)
    Prevent your screen from going dark

    Instructions

    • Pop all of the ingredients into a high powered blender (I use a vitamix). Blend until everything is combined.

      Poor thing! I hope you feel better soon. 5 weeks is a long time to feel crummy. I love the combo of flavors in this smoothie. I am always a fan of coconut water and the honey thing always gets my attention. I will have to try this out soon!

      I love the vibrant color of these smoothies! I've been feeling so meh lately with my allergies and the way the temperatures have been jumping around here in NJ. I feel like one of these is exactly the pick me up I need! Plus, hello Vitamix. I'm kind of obsessed with mine! 🙂

      This cold season has been the worst right!?! Mine was 3 weeks in, and then I wondered if it was partly spring allergies (in February? Is that possible?) Anyway I started taking allergy meds and I feel loads better now! But I'm adding this to my 'immune booster' arsenal!!! Love it! (And I'll take the cayenne please!)

        Coconut water is the best isn't it - I add it to pretty much every smoothie just for that little extra boost 🙂

    Hello and welcome, I'm Donna!

    I am so glad you are here!

    Since I have a part-time job, 3 little kids, and a love of good food (as do you I assume), I have learned how to get the most out of the kitchen in the smallest amount of time.

    Forget about hunting down weird ingredients and making trips to specialty shops.

    We are going to make the most of what is available at the store and farmer's markets all whilst enjoying some delicious meals the whole family (hopefully...if you have fussy eaters I guarantee nothing) will enjoy.

    Pop on that apron and let's get creative in the kitchen!
