A smoothie version of the traditional cinnamon roll using better-for-you ingredients, the Banana Cinnamon Roll Smoothie is a decadent and super creamy smoothie you can enjoy as a treat without any of the guilt. It even has added oats, which means you can have dessert for breakfast!
The Creamiest Banana Cinnamon Roll Smoothie Recipe
We had a pie shop open up down the road and they offer pie milkshakes.
Let that sink in for a minute....
They put an entire slice of your favorite pie into a blender and make it into your very own personal milkshake....
Ahhhh yu-huh, hand raised, front of the queue!
I ordered one, drank half, and felt sick for the rest of the day.
How To Make A Better-For-You Banana Cinnamon Roll Smoothie
Now I know the idea of putting an entire cinnamon roll into a blender and making it into a smoothie does sound kind of amazing, I am not here to do that for you today.
An experiment for your own time perhaps?
Instead, I have made a much healthier version you can enjoy without having to worry about feeling sick for the rest of the day.
And it is just as easy to make. Simply add all of your ingredients to a high-speed blender, blend until everything is smooth and creamy, and you are good to go.
Save the real pie shake for the weekend.
A Note On Ingredients
The ingredients for this recipe are pretty simple:
Yes, you need to add the ice cubes. The only other frozen ingredient used is the frozen banana, so without the ice cubes, the smoothie will not be cold enough.
If you do not have any frozen bananas, you can always sub in a fresh banana and simply add more ice cubes. Remember, the more ripe your banana is, the sweeter it will be, so if you are using a super ripe banana you might want to cut back on the number of dates you use.
Medjool dates are best. These are the bigger, stickier dates (like these ones) and they will give your smoothie that great texture and caramel taste you want.
You will find them in little containers or big boxes in the fruit and veggie section of most supermarkets.
If you can’t find them you can always sub in some neglet or noor dates, although it will be a little more work.
Simply soak them in warm water for 5 mins, drain them and then use them as called for in the recipe.
Old fashioned oats
Old fashioned oats are what make the smoothie extra creamy and filling.
If you prefer to avoid oats you can sub in some quinoa flakes or leave them out altogether.
If you follow a gluten-free diet be sure to check the notes on the packaging in relation to whether your oats are suitable or not.
It is ok to use chia seeds if you are going to serve this and drink it straight away.
If you plan to keep it or sip on it over a period of time it may become gelatinous, which I don't mind but some people (my husband) won't drink it.
Some additional add-ins you might like for your banana cinnamon roll smoothie:
- Coffee - either instant or brewed espresso
- Protein Powder.

I apologize if someone has already posted about this, but: I’ve never come across a recipe calling for “vanilla essence”, so I just assumed it was similar to extract. After searching/reading about essence vs extract, I discovered- “Vanilla essence is a more processed product usually made using artificial flavors and colors.” Whereas vanilla extract tends to have a more distinguishable vanilla flavor. With that, my thoughts are to decrease the amount of vanilla when making, because I’m using extract. But, just in case, I thought I would ask if you’ve made this smoothie using extract vs essence? What are your thoughts/comments?
Thanks so much for picking up on that mistake. I only ever use vanilla extract, not essence (in fact I have a whole paragraph about why you should not use essence in a lot of my other recipe posts). Corrected now. So to answer your question, no I have not tried it with vanilla essence, however, if someone were to use it I don't think it would change the flavour much at all, as it is supposed to be more of a subtle undertone, not the main flavour. I would stick with 1 teaspoon of the extract, as that is what I used when I was developing the recipe. Thanks 🙂
This has more sugar than ice-cream. Why the dates? Too sweet and unhealthy, great concept with some tweaks.
Hi Jonathan, the dates are in there to give the smoothie the flavor it requires to resemble a cinnamon roll. Without them it becomes a banana cinnamon smoothie (which is still delicious, but not what I was going for)! As it serves 2 people, that is 1.5 dates each - I would hardly call that unhealthy, although I know everyone has a different interpretation of what healthy is. Although it may have more sugar than some ice-creams, it is naturally derived sugar from bananas and dates instead of refined white sugar, so a completely different kettle of fish (again, each to their own).
I am sorry you found this recipe to be too sweet for your liking - maybe next time try something like my super green celery smoothie.
Too much sugar? Natural sugars (sugars that are naturally occurring in fruits) isn't hurtful to the body. We're made to eat these sugars it's the chemical, artificial, added sugars that mess up everyone's health(diabetes).

Now, I am not a fan of smoothies -- I like to chew my food and drink my wine. But this is a different story completely!! I can just imagine the rich taste of the cinnamon plus banana. I'd love to have this after my workout. I'm going to make this smoothie this week.

Oh, my word. A banana cinnamon roll smoothie? I'm in! This does look so creamy and delicious. I love all the ingredients and will be adding the chia seeds when I make it!
Yay 🙂 It's so creamy!! I love the chia, but my husband doesn't drink his for hours after I make it so it does get a bit gelatinous in his case.
